Assistant Quantity Surveyor – Main Contracting (Residential Build)

About the Company:

Our client is a privately owned construction company based on the outskirts of the M25 within Hertfordshire. The company was Established over 20 years ago and has continues to enjoy steady progress over the past few years in a tough economic climate. They provide new build and refurbishment to the Residential, Education and Health Care sectors. Projects typically range from £5-£20m, recent projects include a £17m, 145 unit development at Middlesex Hospital providing key worker and shared ownership properties and a £8m new build school in Hackney.

About the Role:

Our client have released an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to work as part of their team. You will work alongside other Quantity Surveyors and will provide assistance throughout the full life cycle of the build including the execution of commercial, financial and contractual matters.

If you already have experience in Quantity Surveying then this is an exciting opportunity to join a forward thinking company with a great reputation and established QS team. This role will be based at their head office in South Hertfordshire and will involve occasional travel to other sites. Duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Sub-contract tendering and procurement to meet required deadlines
  • Assisting in providing a detailed prelims cost budget and share with Site Manager at the appropriate time.
  • Payment of subcontractors, variation orders and assisting in the settlement of final accounts.
  • Monitoring and explaining cost movements.
  • Manage the adoption process of public works.
  • Take specifications and drawings from Construction handover and prepare suitable packages for tender.
  • Analyse returned tender and recommend the most commercially viable contractor.
  • Monitor and explain subcontractor cost movements.
  • Undertake monthly cost reports and estimate future likely cost expenditure.
  • Report on savings and excesses against budget costs to the Director.
  • Assist in the forecasting of final accounts.
  • Be aware of all codes of practice that impact on surveying e.g. Building Regulations, NHBC requirements, HSE etc.
  • Monitor, reconcile and recharge any costs, which relate to shared cost items with either other businesses within the Group or external Companies.
  • Attend pre start, specification and any other relevant concept meeting as required.
  • Input and maintain any computer based databases or systems.
  • Any other duties as required by the Commercial Director.


The ideal candidate will have a formal degree qualification and be looking to make their first progressive career move. You must be able to multi task and be able to be in control and think about more than one project at a time, along with giving direction where required on things that generally crop up day to day.
