Helping to enhance careers

Learning more about our five-year club member Jon O’Leary

One member of our five-year club should now be a member of a new club, just for him (well him and the founding Directors) – our Associate Director, Jon O’Leary. Last week Jon celebrated his 10th anniversary with us (read all about it here). To continue the celebration and to help highlight Jon’s achievements even further, we have asked him some questions to find out more about him and how he got to where he is today…

How did you end up working in recruitment?

By chance!

I was working in Public Relations and an opportunity for a conversation with Nathan Hall, our MD, came up. I wanted an opportunity to be rewarded for hard work- which is recruitment – although, I had never considered construction as my interests had always been sport-orientated. However, looking back, I had always been around the industry working with various friend’s groundworks or fit-out contractors in holidays etc.

Is this the career path you had always aspired to have?

My mentality has always been to progress up a ‘career ladder’. I have always wanted to manage a team and see it as a challenge. I enjoy seeing people achieve and helping them to do it.

I am honest to admit, I probably took on the management of one or two consultants when I wasn’t ready, however, I learnt a lot from that.

Reflecting back from day one to now, how do you think you have evolved in your current position, professionally and personally?

You need to be constantly evolving. And I think I always have done whether I’ve realised it or not.

Professionally, I have grown from a one-man island to having the responsibility of the day-to-day management of three consultants, along with an overview of the wider business requirements. My end goal is to help the company achieve its targets.

What keeps you motivated to go to work each day?

That we have generally built a great business in Cityscape Recruitment.

The business has grown from three (when I joined) to nearly twenty at the moment. We now have a dedicated and balanced team, who collectively want to achieve. We also all get on – we’re are a close-knit team who work collaboratively together.

What advice would you give someone who is seeking a career in recruitment?

Like any career decision, it needs to be thought through. Recruitment is a competitive market and I would urge people to consider it carefully.

Ultimately, we are dealing with people’s livelihoods and I think that is unfortunately underestimated by a large majority of the industry.

What accomplishment have you been most proud of whilst working at Cityscape Recruitment?

Becoming Associate Director and, as such, having a valid opinion and impact in the direction of the business. Predominately, playing my part in the growth of a sustainable business and the people within it.

If you woke up and had 2,000 unread emails and could only answer 300 of them, how would you choose which ones to answer?

Sounds like a normal Monday morning!

Tell me a little bit about your life outside of work?

I was due to be married in 2020, however, due to the pandemic, this was postponed and is now happening in July 2021.

In between, my fiancee and I had our first child – Arlo – who is now ten weeks old. So between a newborn and a wedding in the final stages of planning, life is somewhat hectic. But I’m loving every moment! I am also a big sportsman – Jack of all, Master of none!

What are your hobbies?

As I said, I am a big sportsman so I spend my free time playing football, golf, tennis, badminton, squash, you name it…

I am also a massive QPR fan and have proudly held a season ticket for 25 years!

Jon is one of six in our five-year club. Considering recruitment is an industry that is known for its high staff turnover, we are proud that 40% of our consultants have been with the company for five years or more. We know that our success is down to our people. There is no point in striving to enhance the careers of construction professionals if we are not doing the same for our team.
