Helping to enhance careers

Day in the life of Jon O’Leary

Who are our Recruitment Consultants? Do we as colleagues, clients and professionals know who we work with and why our consultants put their all into working collaboratively to deliver the results you expect?

We have sat down with our Associate Director, Jon O’Leary to appreciate who he is, what motivates him and what he is passionate about. With a passion for sport, who would have thought you could go from being in Public Relations to Construction Recruitment?

Have a breather and gain some insight into a day in the life of Jon…..

1. How did you become a Recruitment Consultant (leading to Associate Director)?

By chance! I was working in Public Relations at the time and an opportunity for a conversation with Nathan Hall, our MD, came up. I wanted an opportunity to be rewarded for hard work although, I had never considered construction as my interest had always been sport orientated. Looking back, I had always been around the industry working with friends’ groundworks and fit out contractors in holidays etc…

2. As Associate Director, is this the career path you had always aspired to have?

My mentality has always been to progress up a ladder. I had wanted to manage a team and see it as a challenge, I enjoy seeing people achieve and helping them to this point. I am honest enough to say I probably took on the management of one or two consultants when I wasn’t ready, however, I have learnt from this.

3. Reflecting back from day one to now, how do you think you have evolved in your current position, professionally and personally?

You need to be constantly evolving, I think I always have whether I realised this or not. Professionally, I have grown from a one-man island to the responsibility of 3 consultants, and a wider business remit helping us to achieve our targets. The business has grown from three (when I joined) to nearly twenty at present.

4. What keeps you motivated to go to work each day?

That we have built a great business at Cityscape Recruitment. The team has grown and we have a dedicated and balanced team that want to achieve and we all get on. We are a close-knit business that work collaboratively.

5. What advice would you give someone who is seeking the same line of work?

Like any career decision it needs thought given to it. Recruitment is a competitive market, I would urge people to consider it carefully. Ultimately, we are dealing with people’s livelihoods and I think that is underestimated by a large majority of the industry.

6. What accomplishment have you been most proud of whilst working at Cityscape Recruitment?

Becoming Associate Director of the business and having a valid opinion and impact in the direction of the business. Predominately, the growth of a sustainable business and the people within it.

7. If you woke up and had 2,000 unread emails and could only answer 300 of them, how would you choose which ones to answer?

Sounds like a Monday morning!

8. Tell me a little bit about your life outside of work?

I am getting married to my fiancé Molly in 2020, we live in Bucks. The planning is entering full swing and I can’t wait to marry my bride to be. We have two cats. Beyond this, I am a big sportsman, Jack of all master of none!

9. What are your hobbies?

Football, golf, tennis, badminton, squash, you name it…. I am also a QPR fan and have held a season ticket for 25 years!

Thank you Jon, really appreciate your time.
