Business 1 – Hertfordshire Based

Having worked with this contractor for the past 10+ years I have seen them develop in both size and capability. They now currently turnover around £100 million per annum, building concrete frame and groundwork packages ranging in value up to £30 million each for a variety of residential and commercial contractors and developers throughout London and the surrounding Home Counties. They have a very modern edge to the business while maintaining traditional roots. I know each of the directors of this business and I would highly recommend them all as leaders in their own rights, but also as a family-like unit that brings out the best in each other.

On a personal note, I believe this company is one of the best not only for the projects they help complete and not only because of their size and general capability but also because of the environment they create. They go that extra mile to not only retain their staff but to truly keep them happy. Small things have been added to the office like a gym that people have access to all day! They have a treatments room where massages and treatments are available to everyone on Fridays. All you have to do is book in. And with plans in place for a rooftop garden and BBQ area, I’d want to work here myself if I had the relevant experience! These little perks may not seem a lot in the grand picture, but hopefully, they go towards showing what type of employer this is (i.e., a business that takes the time to take care of their people and give a little back).

They really are a great company to work for and be part of. You can gain great project experience, develop capability in modern construction techniques and you can be part of the values they believe in and a truly fantastic team.


Business 2 – Central London Based

Having been established for over 40 years within the specialist field of concrete frames and groundworks, this business is, without doubt, one of the leading names within this field (literally top 3 name in my opinion). Current turnover is over £150m per annum and they have consistently worked at the cutting edge of the sector to be one of the best at what they do. They currently complete packages ranging in value from £10m up to £100m each on a mixture of residential, commercial, educational, and leisure projects throughout the London area and further around the UK.

This business prides itself on its high repeat business rate and its in-house capability to take complex projects from design through to completion. I would highly recommend this business as a polished environment where individuals can grow and flourish working on some of the best and most iconic projects in and around London and it is worth pointing out, that I have never had anyone leave this business in a short period of time that I have placed there.


Business 3 – Hertfordshire Based

Based in Hertfordshire just north of the M25 this privately owned business specialises in the construction of reinforced concrete frames and associated groundwork packages. They currently turnover around £50 million per annum but with sensible plans in place for targeted growth, this is expected to increase by around £5-£10m per annum.

They offer a modern image with a very polished office, excellent in-house capability, and great standards for quality in everything they do. They maintain a focus of developing their systems before expanding their workload and this is demonstrated by the fact they own their own building, their own large plant yard, their own formwork, their own plant, and much more. The business directors are constantly focusing on investing back into the business to build in security for everyone that works there plus better working conditions and capabilities for moving forward. This truly is a very exciting business to work for.

Outside of the above, on a personal note, it is worth mentioning that this office environment is second to none. There is obviously a good balance between work and play within this business and with additional little perks, you get a real feel for how people matter to this company.


Business 4 – East London Based

Currently operating with a turnover of around £60 million per annum, this privately owned specialist concrete frame and groundwork subcontractor build packages ranging from £1m up to £15 million each. Their client base is predominately a mixture of residential main contractors and developers with the majority of their projects in and around East and North London.

This business has a good reputation in the market with both its clients and rivals. They maintain a quality approach to everything they do while partnering with businesses rather than fighting them. They have a low staff turnover and an inner core of staff that really work well together as a team. And like many others, they are still growing and looking at ways to expand what they already do while keeping growth at a considered rate.

On a side note, to back up the relationship the MD of the business has with his inner core, most years the team is known to go on skiing holidays and similar together. Not only to grab some well-earned recuperation time but also to help them forge as a team at the center of the business. This company really does thrive from maintaining relationships both internally and with everyone they work with.


Business 5 – Hertfordshire Based

And last but by no means least, my final option is a mid-sized specialist subcontractor again based in Hertfordshire just off the M25. They turn over around £65 million per annum but that is expected to grow this year and moving forwards. They have a close-knit team and believe in working together to offer a competitive solution to their client’s concrete frame and groundwork needs. Projects are spread predominantly around London, but they have been known to work as far out as Cambridge. And package values usually range from around £1 million to £15 million each (with the occasional one going above).

On a personal note, I have known some of the directors of this business going back 10+ years and regard them as truly fantastic people to work with. Whoever is successful in securing this opportunity will be surrounded by driven individuals who will support and work with you to make this company the best it can be. This business has some great individuals, but together they form an excellent team that you can be part of.


About the Opportunities:

Our clients are all looking to strengthen their existing preconstruction teams by adding an experienced Estimator or Senior Estimator to their ranks.

The opportunities will involve the usual duties such as putting together tenders for the concrete frame and groundwork packages in and around London for primarily residential developers/contractors, but some also work in the commercial, educational, industrial, leisure, and other sectors too. Usual package values you will be expected to target could range anywhere from £1m up to £100m each depending on which option you look at and some or all of the following duties will apply:

  • Preparation of tender submissions
  • Measuring and take-offs from drawings
  • Producing bills-of-quantities
  • Cost Planning
  • Pre and post Contract meetings with clients to sell not only the price but the reason they should pick your business over others too
  • Build-up of tender price from first principles based on plans, programme, and scope of works


About the Requirements:

For these opportunities, I am looking for individuals who have previous experience working for an RC / Concrete Frame and Groundwork subcontractor in the UK in an estimating capacity.

It is important you have the knowledge of pricing and producing tenders for Concrete Frame and Groundwork packages in and around the South East and London to be considered.

About the Salary / Remuneration:

Due to the nature of these opportunities, I am looking to target individuals currently earning anywhere from £70,000 to £120,000 per annum (£300 to £500 per day if self-employed).

Salaries/rates will be negotiable at the point of the interview depending on the level of experience you have gained.

With the basic salary, our client offers the usual package of car allowance, pension, bonuses, and similar if you are PAYE, or a slightly tailored version of benefits if you are self-employed.
