Design Manager – Cladding Fire Safety Inquiry Specialist

£50,000 – £70,000 + Car Allowance, Travel, Healthcare & Bonus

St Albans, Herts

About the Role:

This role is one of a kind. My client, a tier-one main contractor, are taking the lead on the ever-changing and tricky subject of cladding fire safety regulation on their high rise buildings. A specialist team has been put together to investigate, monitor and improve the cladding on any of their buildings over 18 metres in London. The aim of this team? To develop best practice for fire stopping, detailing, materials and specifications by producing best practice documents based on the latest regulations and other guidance documents. This will enable the team to provide advice and support to new construction projects, both during tender and during construction.

With most of the team in place and already working, they are looking for the missing piece – a well-experienced Design Manager to support the team on their mission. This role provides the opportunity for a driven Design Manager to be at the cutting edge of the latest fire regulations and to help develop governance within the company for fire safety.

Due to the nature and focus of this new team, the role will be ever-changing as the laws and legislations are being reviewed in light of the well documented Grenfell Inquiry. The role will start at an investigative stage. Locating and looking back through old project drawings and searching for anything that could be a potential issue, liaising with the legal team and engineers to design cost worthy solutions, which will then be rolled out across the business.

About the Company:

This tier-one main contractor, with an annual UK turnover in excess of £500m, specialises in delivering major projects from £50m to £500m and has had a recent focus on high rise residential projects. Over the years they have gone from strength to the strength. Delivering sustainable growth across all regions, utilising excellent client relationships and successfully pricing, planning and delivering landmark schemes up and down the country.

The London Division of this massive enterprise includes some of the business’s largest projects, namely some exceptional high-rise residential developments. With the massive amount of building work going on in the capital, this sector of the business is one of the most successful and has a bulging order book to match.

Requirements:

The successful candidate must have the ability to review, understand and interpret fire strategy documents and specifications as well as investigating different materials for internal fire compartmentation, fire stopping and external use. They will have excellent communication skills to enable them to work closely with the different teams involved, an acute eye for detail and the patience required to undertake this unique role. Proven experience of managing design within a similar environment is a must, with a working knowledge of the ever-changing UK Building Regulations.

The perfect candidate will have worked on projects over 80 metres, with responsibility for the refurbishment of large cladding packages. They will have working knowledge and hold an engineering or construction qualification to degree level.

About the benefits/rewards:

The salary will be dependent on the level of exposure to industry. The company offers excellent opportunities and a basic salary of between £50,000 – £70,000 alongside a generous benefits package. The company encourages promotion for candidates that are enthusiastic and competent. Employees will be promoted through the company at a rate that is comfortable for their abilities rather than within a set company structure. This encourages the strengths and successes of the company and each individual.
